EPISODE #4: Searching for a Hit
AIRED: November 5, 2007
Question: How do you know when a reality show’s episode is going to be a roller-coaster of emotions? Answer: When it opens with the wife (Deb) of mega-music producer - Irv Gotti points out a hickie on his neck…a hickie which was not produced by her. Of course, Gotti played it off by rummaging through the fridge, stating that it’s not a hickie… listing a litany of excuses but the moment was awkward. Looking at the routine disappointment etched on Deb’s face – it was clear that she represents many wives caught in the stifling situation of the “limbo marriage.” Yet, I digress…this week’s episode “Searching for a Hit” focused on Irv signing a new artist, Vanessa Carlton, and Deb’s attempt to meet a new man.
First, we (the audience) watched as Irv listened to Vanessa Carlton play the piano and sing (in her home) for Irv. I must admit, it was a slight bit painful watching Irv GUSH over Vanessa (a wonderful talent) as she droned out her song. Vanessa was good and her lyrics were poetic and thought-provoking with a…Jewel slash Alanis Morristte feel (and I have CD’s by both) but not gushing- worthy. Watching this “gush” fest, I yelled at my TV, “Irv, come on, man! It’s not like she the incarnation of Aretha Franklin - belting a tune!” So, he signed her – and gushed some more and added more gushing –just incase we were unclear that he, Irv, was gushing. Another, interesting moment (interesting with a raised eye-brow) was Irv hanging out with his “non-descript boys.” A few pretty girls introduced themselves and met Irv and his “non-descript” boys for dinner. Irv and a pretty girl engaged in flirtatious conversation but it ended when she asked, “Are all the men at this table single?” Irv replied, “Yes, yes we all are!” Even though, Irv is married – he is separated from his wife – ergo the earlier term “limbo marriage.” However, the conversation took a weird – ‘almost forced dialogue’ turn when the “pretty girl” drilled Irv about having that ‘special someone’ at home. Then, Irv gave the ‘sum it up – and say good-night’ comment, “She wasn’t special enough for me too stop f*cking other women!” Hold the phone - can somebody please, rewind! Now, if that sentence isn’t blunt enough for Deb…we’re talking the epitome of bluntness, then ‘blunt’ does not exist. But, I am compelled to give it up to Irv – I so appreciate a person who will state their truth -- no matter how inane it maybe or painful to hear.
That beautiful blunt statement will segue to the second storyline of Deb at 40/40 Club with DMX’s wife – Tashera, as they discuss the possibility of Deb dating other men. I must admit – it was comical when a ‘non-descript’ man introduced himself to Deb. She was not impressed and her action spoke volumes to this point. As the scene continued, Deb revealed that her main concern regarding dating was how her kids would view her. Message to Deb: “If dating causes you to enjoy yourself, erase your sour frown and lighten up – girl, your kids would be elated. A happy Deb – means a happy mother & happy kids.” Well, the show ended on the same volatile note which kicked it off…Deb accused Irv of “having his cake and eating it and Irv apologized (sarcastically) to Deb’s for her limited selection of eligible men. That was a laugh out loud moment. Stay tune for next week’s episode.
